PROGRAM ADVISORY BOARD

Alumni Survey

The Program Advisory Board (PAB) for the Petroleum Engineering (PE) Department at Mines sent a survey to 2450 Mines PE alumni for whom the department has contact information. About 18% responded, with representation from each decade back to the 1950s. A presentation summarizing the results of the survey was reviewed by the PAB at their April 2019 meeting. The presentation is posted on the department website here: www.petroleum.mines. edu/advisoryboard

The survey subcommittee asked questions to collect demographical information and decided to analyze the survey information in three groups, by years of Fulltime Experience: 0-4 years (139 responses), 5-9 years (109 responses) and > 10 years (193 responses). Additional questions covered career preparation and how well their education met program objectives within 3 to 5 years of graduation. The survey covered preparation for lifelong learning to learn new skills and preparation for career change. The survey requested feedback on which aspect of PE education at Mines provided the best preparation for the alumni’s career. The survey also asked what changes, if any, should be made to the PE education at Mines. The survey asked for input as to whether select topics should be given added emphasis in the PE curriculum at Mines in the future, as well as feedback on the quality of Mines professors and their respective industry experience. The PAB plans to use the results of the survey to guide their future advice for the PE department, and they will issue a similar survey to alumni annually.

The survey subcommittee also conducted a second survey of employers, but did not get sufficient response from employers to come up with meaningful understanding of what employers think of CSM graduates. We need to do a better job of identifying key engineering hiring manager contacts such as a VP of Engineering at employers to get a better response. Please provide the engineering hiring manager contact information for your employer to Kayla Boster at kboster@mines.edu so she can send them the survey.
