INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS WITH SU & NU

The Colorado School of Mines Petroleum Engineering (PE) Department has always had a strong international reputa - tion and enjoyed solid relationships with both industry and academic partners around the world. During the past few years, two relationships, both based in Kazakhstan (KZ), have brought some new and unique opportunities to the department and Mines that we thought you might enjoy hearing about.

Supported by the World Economic Forum (WEF) members Chevron, Shell, and ENI, the Mines’ PE department has worked with the petroleum engineering department at Satbayev University (SU) in Almaty, KZ, to develop an En- glish-based program in addition to the historically taught Russian and Kazakh classes. The SU PE department is head- ed up by Mines’ alumnus, Murat Syzdykov, who we have worked closely with to develop these courses, as well as with their faculty on course delivery methods. The first 29 students graduated from this program in May 2020, and ef- forts have now turned to working on research projects with the SU faculty, as well as building a pipeline of students for the Mines’ graduate program.

Our second KZ partner is Nazarbayev University (NU), based in Nur-Sultan. This program also includes the Mines’ min - ing, geology, and geophysics departments and has involved the development of master’s level graduate programs
