Achievements & Competitions
• Mines Petrobowl team competed at the North American
PetroBowl Regional Qualifier in February and earned a spot to
compete in the global finals at ATCE. Team members include Niels
Snow, junior, Will Benson, sophomore, Nicholas Bryan, freshman,
Eduardo Mendoza-Vega, junior, Deep Joshi, PhD candidate and
alternate Ethan Anderson sophomore. The team is especially
proud of their achievement considering the relative inexperience
of their team compared to those with multiple graduate students.
• Masters students Arkhat Kalbekov and Valeria Suarez Bolivar
participated in SPWLA PDDA’s 1st Petrophysical Data-Driven
Analytics Contest on Sonic Log Synthesis. The competition was
held between all SPWLA members, including professionals from
the industry, and ended with 30 ranked teams. Arkhat and Val won
third place.
• Four of our students – Angela Nguyen, Kirtland McKenna, Rashid
Zakirov, and Syed Ali - received scholarships ranging from $2,600
to $3,400 from AADE Rocky Mountain Chapter in March.
• The 2019-2020 Mines Drillbotics team met with success this year
as they designed a rig for the first time in three years. Although
the final contest was canceled, the team was able to design a
formidable miniature drilling rig that, if built, would have been
capable of automatically drilling miniature directional well bores.
The design passed the qualifying entrance examination and the
team was offered a substantial travel stipend from SPE to attend
the competition in Houston this summer. The team will be back
at it this coming fall. If you have any interest in participating or in
supporting the team, please reach out to Dr. Bill Eustes!
